HomeGrown has been distributing seeds for you to plant and enjoy. We are distributing seeds for the Maya sunflower, pictured to the right. These seeds are ready to plant now! Select a small well drained area in full sun, 2 ft. by 2 ft. should be about right. Remove any vegetation from the ground, and work the soil slightly to a depth of no more than one inch. The seeds can be pressed into the soil, but do not need to be fully covered. The seeds will germinate and plants appear in 7 to 21 days. Water them generously (I water mine every day) during this period. Harvest bouquets in early morning or late afternoon hours. Collect flowers that are the almost completely open. Remove leaves below water line. The cut flowers have a vase life of 6 to 10 days. Sequential plantings every 2--4 weeks apart will provide continuous color and bouquets (Feel free to contact us if you would like more seeds!). Overhead watering is not recommended, it is best to water them at the base of the plant.
